The basis for both forest planning and forest policy, forest inventory is a procedure for gathering data on the quality and quantity of forest resources. Modern forest inventory concepts support a holistic view of forest ecosystems, addressing not only timber production but also the multiple functions of forests as well as the need to understand the working mechanisms of forest ecosystems, in contrast to early concepts of sustainable forest management and forest inventory that were focused on timber production.
